TIMRA 2024: Monitoring, research and holding the industry accountable
at
Researchers and advocates from 35 countries joined the Tobacco Control Research Group and its Tobacco Tactics Team in July for the 2024 Tobacco Industry Monitoring, Research and Accountability (TIMRA) training course.
The course, run in a hybrid model in person and online, covered a range of topics from the industry ‘playbook’ of tactics, obligations under article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, key topics in tobacco control research, and the importance of a robust, rigorous and protected evidence base. Training sessions focussed on TCRG data and resources, investigative skills to support monitoring and research, and how to publish and promote findings and have impact. The overall aim of the training is to provide participants with a solid foundation to conduct their own monitoring and investigations of the tobacco industry, and to support colleagues with evidence-based knowledge to conduct tobacco control work in their own countries.
The course also provided an opportunity for participants to share the challenges they face in their own countries and the ways in which they are tackling them, as well as networking opportunities and social events.

The training was based on the Theory of Change Model developed by the Tobacco Control Research Group. This model is also known as TIMRA.
