A new article by the Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG), published in BDJ Team, highlights how the tobacco industry engages with dental professionals in order to promote its newer tobacco and nicotine products.

Big tobacco and the dental team: what you need to know” explores how tobacco companies use webinars, educational events, sponsored content and research to reach dental teams, who play an important role in preventative healthcare and supporting smoking cessation. Tobacco companies may be keen to work with these trusted professionals in order to try to build credibility for their products, while awareness of tobacco industry engagement may be lower in dentistry than in other medical professions.

This article builds on previous research on the targeting of dental professionals in Germany by tobacco company Philip Morris International (PMI).
