The remaining leaf we buy is sourced through third-party suppliers from 26 countries that in turn contract with over 250,000 farmers. Regarding the farms in our supply chain and the farmers we work with: Tobacco is grown on an average of 40% of farmers’ land, generating around 60% of their total farm income. 90% of our farmers grow other crops, including fruit, vegetables, wheat, maize, cotton and soy bean. Average farmer age is 43 years. Majority are small-scale family farms of one hectare or less. Approximately 130,000 school-age children live on the family farms."(8) In 2017 direct leaf operations existed in Mexico, Chile, Bangladesh brazil, Venzuela, Nigeria, Kenya, Uzbekistan, China, pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnman. Over 100000 farmers were purchased from in Mozambique, 20-35000 farmers were purchased from in Bangladesh, India,Turkey, Malawi, Croatia & Brazil -most of these via third party suppliers. PRIMARY PROCESSING: 19 manufacturing facilities processing tobacco only. (11) SECONDARY PROCESSING At the end of 2019 had 45 cigarette factories in 43 countries(6) and 8 sites processing other tobacco products -SNUS modern Oral and Liquids. (11) LOGISTICS & MARKETING 30,000 indirect suppliers worldwide of other goods and services, such as paper, filters, RRP components, machinery, IT and professional services, based in more than 150 countries worldwide.
