Members of the Tobacco Control Research Group attended the Union for International Cancer Control’s (UICC) World Cancer Congress in Geneva. 2,000 delegates from more than 120 countries attended the event, both in person and online.
Professor Anna Gilmore contributed to a plenary session on the importance of addressing the commercial determinants of health in preventing non-communicable disease globally, and why health harming industries shouldn’t be allowed a seat at the policy making table.
Dr Rob Branston presented on lessons from Europe on tobacco taxation, in a session on the crucial role of tobacco tax in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Karin Silver presented on the work of Tobacco Tactics, focussing on the use of evidence when documenting tobacco industry activity, as part of a session on monitoring, exposing and holding the tobacco industry accountable.
In addition, work on science for profit by Dr Tess Legg and Dr Alice Fabbri was cited by UICC in a session on tackling fraudulent science.
Before the congress UICC withdrew from the 10th annual World Cancer Series, organised by The Economist, owing to its work with the tobacco industry. Other speakers and attendees pulled out and the event was cancelled. For more information see the UICC statement and article in The Guardian.
