Background
Altria is the parent company of:[1]
- Philip Morris USA, a tobacco manufacturer
- Philip Morris Capital Corp., an investment company
- U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, a smokeless tobacco manufacturer
- John Middleton, a cigars and pipe tobacco manufacturer
- Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, a wine producer
Its tobacco companies own four major brands: Marlboro, Copenhagen, Skoal and Black & Mild.[2]
The companies Altria owns employ almost 10,000 people in the US.[3]
Altria used to own all of Philip Morris' international operations. But in 2007, it decided to separate the firm's US and international operations. According to Associated Press, the move would "clear the international tobacco business from the legal and regulatory constraints facing its domestic counterpart, Philip Morris USA".[4] The spin-off was completed in 2008, leaving two distinct companies: Philip Morris International and Philip Morris USA.[5]

Stake in Alcohol Industry
Altria owns wine producer Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, and has a 28.7% share in SAB Miller, one of the world's largest brewer and bottling company based in the UK. Under the terms and conditions of an agreement between Altria and SAB Miller (as part of the Miller Brewing Company) in 2002, Altria has the right to nominate up to three representatives as non-executive directors of SAB Miller.[8] Currently Altria is represented on the SABMiller Board by its Dinyar Devitre and Howard Willard. Altria's former CEO Geoffrey Bible is also on the board.[9][10]
